she smoked in her room, and colored her hair

yesterday i went to all of my tuesday classes: native issues and insights, community-based research methods, cree, and ecological anthropology. in between i came home for some breakfast; asked a couple of staff members in native studies if i could use them as references for a course i want to take; ate a really delicious raspberry bagel in sub; and took some papers to csl house, only to find out that they couldn't take cash for the deposit i needed to give for a course. i came home and did some dishes, started watching a documentary called "poisoning paradise" (which i had seen before in a sociology class - it's about the swan hills toxic waste treatment plant, and how the toxic waste is affecting individuals and communities in the lesser slave lake indian regional council), but the copy i had from the u of a library was really bad quality, and kept cutting out. i stopped the video and did some reading for my csl class. then i knitted and crocheted a bit, and read a bit of "lullabies for little criminals." it is a good book, but i am taking a long time to get through it.

this morning my sister woke me up at 8:30 by being loud. boo. i had a shower and then waited around for the shaw guy to come and change our phone over to shaw. apparently you get some sort of deal if you get shaw internet and telephone together. i'm pretty sure the deal isn't that great, but my sister and i were tired of our old telephone provider, so we decided to try shaw out. they neglected to mention that they use the t.v. cable for your phone line, so now we only have one phone in our apartment, and it's in a really awkward location. boo. i was too lazy to protest, though. after the shaw guy left, my dad came up and dropped off a few things, because he was in the city for the day. i got a couple of cheques (gst & tax rebates; money from my mom for food), some snowshoes, and this amazing letter my gido wrote in 1943 to my grandma, just a few months before they were married. it's all written in a spiral. gido bill wrote, "i'm sorry if this letter makes you dizzy, but that's the way i feel." a-dorable. i gave my dad a picture i had had enlarged of him as a teenager, riding his first horse, trixie. trixie is rearing up, and my dad looks totally in control. it's such a rad picture. my dad was pretty pleased, i think. i got him to sign my copy of the picture, because, hey, why not? after dad left, i went to csl house to drop my forms off for the course, along with my $100 deposit in the form of a cheque my mom had sent. thanks, mom! then i went to cree, and then CSL 300. CSL 300 is a 3-hour course i have every wednesday from 1:00 until 4:00. i was good for the first half of the class, but after 2:30, i must have low blood sugar or something, because i didn't say a word for the second half of the seminar. oops. after class i bussed down to steeps on whyte, where jessica, becky, claire and i met for crafting and tea. usually i work on crocheting or knitting when i'm there, but today i cut out stencils of animals that i will use on the bags and wallets that i sew. the stencils look adorable. becky had to leave at 6:30, and claire had to leave at 7:00, but i stuck around until jessica played a couple of songs (including a sufjan song!) to start off open mic night at 8:30 at steeps. she is so great. i walked home and have been working on my CSL journal ever since.
