rock!!!rock!!!rock!!!

today. no, yesterday. yesterday. yesterday i drove home in the jeep, and highway 16 eastbound is pretty much off-roading without the pleasure of mud and puddles. thank you, alberta infrastructure. i met my dad in vegreville for lunch at vito's, and then i drove to vermilion. i sat at home and crocheted mittens - some for alyssa, some for courtney, some for myself....

oh! i remember what i was going to say about yesterday. as i was driving home, somewhere between vegreville and vermilion, i was thinking about what my dad thinks about me going to guyana. as usual, our meal in vegreville consisted of him trying to persuade me to not go to guyana, and instead, encouraging me to plan out all my life right now and to get a job at husky oil for the rest of my life. he is worried about a million things that could go wrong on the trip. and as i was driving, i kept thinking about how, when i worked at the shelters, i would always look up at the clock on the wall to see what time it was. but since it was the middle of the night, and all the clients were sleeping, the room would be dark, and for some reason, my eyes couldn't focus on the hands of the clock if i looked straight at it. but strangely, if i looked slightly to the left or right of the clock, my peripheral vision could pick up the position of the hands, and i could tell the time. anyways, it just reminded me of all this guyana stuff because if you look at it straight on, like my dad is, it is difficult to make sense of why i am going. there is a bunch of stuff that could make me sick, physically, mentally, and emotionally, and it seems like there will be a lot of things that will be really difficult. a smoother course would be to stay in edmonton, in familiarity and comfort, and just get a job and keep it for a million years and save money. but i have to look at this all like i looked at the clock - not straight on, but a little to the left or right. by focusing on things around guyana, instead of guyana itself, it just seems so clear that this is the right thing for me. all the things i've done for the last few years, working with AFL and the shelters and at the museum; all the possibilities for the future, like the native studies program at the u of a; and the things in the present, like the deep need and desire to leave the city for an extended period of time - all those things combined make that thing in the middle, that time in guyana, a little more clearer. so i shall be confident in that, hope for the best, and be thankful for friends' thoughts and prayers.

anyway... back to my time at home. i watched "match point" with my mom, which, like all movies lately, was too too long. boo. but we also made some blueberry crumble, which was magically delicious.

today, i was up at 9:30 and my mom made us tea biscuits. mm-mmm. i crocheted some more, and watched "hank williams first nation" by myself. i liked it. i especially liked hearing names like "salt prairie" and "grouard" and stuff like that, and being excited because i knew where they were. they even mentioned "vermilion," but i think that they might have meant fort vermilion, if they were even referring to a real place at all. neat, still. and it was nice to hear the men talk in cree in one part. i am quickly becoming convinced that cree is the prettiest language in the world.

my mom and i made fajitas, and i cleaned up, and then we went into town so i could say goodbye to my grandma and gido. their street was being torn up, so we had to park a couple of blocks away and walk to their house. as usual, they were crazy and funny. my grandma had broken one of her teeth on a hard white candy, and her smile was really different. i didn't like it. i am used to her smile being one way. everything changes when your smile changes. she was wearing a hat that she had found in one of the barns at the farm when she went this week. EVERY time she comes to our house, she sings this little song, whether she's wearing a hat or not:

"i had a hat when i came in,
i hung it on the rack.
i'll have a hat when i go out,
or i'll break somebody's back."

funny. it was nice to see them. it's something i don't like to think about, but i sure hope i will see them again when i get back. they are so constantly entertaining, and i really like their funny little laughs and ukrainian accents and jewish-esque vernacular ("oi, yoi, yoi").

one of the best things of all summer is what happened when my mom and i were walking out to the car. just when we were getting into the car, this jeep full of boys listening to the tragically hip sped by, then parked at the end of the construction. six boys got out, and started skateboarding. after a few seconds, i realized that two of the boys were cassidy and cody harbak! anyone not from vermilion can never understand how exciting and wonderful that was, but hopefully andrea and kelsey can. little jonas was there too. it was good to talk to the boys, and see that not much has really changed (except for chad and cassidy's matching wives). i seriously miss them and chad and jonas like mad. jonas and his wife are apparently in thailand, which is crazy. i still have a little bit of time to convert, with the hopes that the last standing harbak will marry me.

anyways, jehovah's witness high school friends aside, my evening continued with a ride back to edmonton and a visit with a very supportive, very understanding courtney p. i'm glad we got to hang out. i'm glad she understands stuff.

tomorrow i have to pack up a little bit, then drive to calgary. that will be nice. one of my all-time favorite things to do is to drive by myself for long distances and listen to music. then kelseydawn and i might go see pirates of the carribean II. then my training officially starts on monday! let's hope calgary transit is as fast, friendly, and reliable as ETS.

"s.o.l., in existential terms"

i hung out with dr. e and dr. zinck before my kickball party on wednesday. we sat on the patio at high level diner and ate WAY too much blueberry crumble. as always, it was nice to hear dr. zinck make sense of relationships and life, and to hear dr. e make sense of superman, pirates of the carribean II, and johnny depp.

my kickball party was nice. small, but nice. bri, joel, bethany, karen, julie, and her friend john showed up, as well as darcy, to my surprise. we only played one and a half innings, but i think that team caylie-joel-karen came out on top, despite being at bat only once. we were too tired to play any more than that, so we ate strawberries and salt and pepper chips, and then we went to my house to eat dairy queen ice cream. nice to talk to bethany about glue sticks and hiking boots, to joel about poetry, and to karen and bri about travelling. as a side note, i am thrilled to say that i haven't really gotten noticeably sick from my immunizations. hip, hip, hooray!

yesterday i hung out with dr. e yet again, as karen, julie, julie's friend john, and i went to her house for a pizza party. nice to be able to hang out and say goodbye.

jenni's band, "illfit outfit," played at the sidetrack last night. it was nice to see lots of king's people, and nice to finally meet landon, and nice to be able to say goodbye to lots of people. i think jenni is my new band crush, thanks to her many facial expressions and cute little stiff, girl, "pop pop pops." i had a really strong urge to just get up and go home in the middle of the set, and i had to fight it pretty hard to avoid hurting people's feelings by not saying goodbye. it's not like i didn't like the music, but... i don't know. something in me gets restless. i used to listen to it a lot more often, but for the last couple of years, i've really begun to fight it for other peoples' sake. but i think i'm going to start listening again. i like it and it feels good.

i talked to courtney for a long time on msn after i got home, and i am still pretty disappointed i haven't gotten to see her. maybe i will come into edmonton saturday night to hang out, but i'll have to see. i sure do like her, and i wish we hung out more.

today i have to/get to drive my dad's jeep back home, but i'm not sure i am insured on it. let's hope. my car is being a piece of garbage, and keeps unlocking every two seconds when i drive, and the alarm went off last week WHILE i was driving, and now it unlocks itself when it is parked. yikes. but i don't have the money/time to get it fixed. eff. i just hope i don't find anyone sleeping in it or something.

off to vermilion now.

bff day

in honor of bff day (which was yesterday, apparently):

*hearts*

"my embassy told me to never get off!"

this morning i was walking down to roots organic market, and this man, about 60 years old, drove by. he wasn't fat, but he was big, and he was driving his mid-90's convertible with the top down. he was shirtless, and had a big bouquet of red flowers in the passenger seat. awesome.

yesterday i had two really great hang-out dates. first, i went to see dr. e at her new condo. it is fantastic - tons of space, well-picked colors, and it is very "her." i told her all about guyana, and she was so supportive and encouraging. i really feel like this whole trip is part of providence/fate/destiny/a calling/"plans to prosper... and not to harm," and it was nice to hear from someone who feels the same way. not like anyone really thinks it isn't, but try explaining providence to parents who would rather worry about things that are out of our control. anyways, she was very excited for me, and i certainly appreciated that. especially since she really knows the things i've been up to and interested in for the last couple of years.

later in the evening, i drove to karen's house and we went to julie and janelle's welcome home party. it was great to be with karen again, and just talk and driveand hang out. the party turned out to be the most enjoyable social gathering i've been to in a long time. a lot of the king's women's basketball alumnae were there, and it was good to see them again and listen to (but not understand) frantically excited talk about professional and local basketball. julie and janelle told some very animated and entertaining stories about their time in europe, and in doing so helped to quell some of the fears i have about homesickness. it was nice to hang out with a group of young women who identify themselves as "christian" and who i respect so much. good times. thanks, girls.

today, after blueberry crumble with dr. e, i am having my kickball party. i don't think there is a large quantity of people planning to come, but those coming are of top-notch quality. if there are not enough players and the game falls through, we can always feed the ducks and the geese and then come home and eat dairy queen cake and watch the challengers. fun day.

prone to wander

i hate endings. i hate goodbyes and last days and final episodes. i hate leaving places and i hate leaving people. i am a sucker and i cry every single time.

friday was the last day i spent in sucker creek/grouard. in the morning, as i was getting ready, lee came into my room with her little pink nightgown on, and offered me a set of airline cutlery as a going away present. so cute. i went to work for the day, and headed back to her house one last time to say goodbye. i had to finish packing up a bit, and she had to leave to help with family camp, but we hugged and cried and she kept saying, "you'll make it, my girl." i'm not exactly sure what "making it" entails, but it was nice to hear. i watched the simpsons, and then i left. my goodbyes to places are often characterized first by slows walks around, then long, sad gazes through the rearview mirror.

i will miss you, boreal forest. i will miss you, lesser slave lake. you too, my sunflowers. i will also miss the people: lee and meghan; the other museum staff; the staff of fountain tire and IGA and the leisure centre in high prairie, who i got to see fairly regularly.

i will miss being junior high-esque with meghan, getting creeped out and running away from the scary part of the museum; spying on the hot construction boys; trying to find excuses to go to high prairie; and being museum snobs, snickering about the ignorant masses who, for instance, think that buffalo live in alberta (buffalo live in asia and africa - we only have bison here).

anyway...

on my 4-hour drive back to edmonton, i realized that my distaste for endings is (unfortunately) coupled with an equal and opposite restlessness and need for change. the thought of full time jobs or living in the same place for more than about a year sends me into a low-grade panic attack. i am excited for my trip to guyana, but i am always so wary of how the beginning of one thing means the end of something else. often, that new beginning is healthier and better, and i know that, but i still just hate, hate, hate goodbyes.

tomorrow morning i'm off to capital health to get a million immunizations and malaria pills. cheers to sitting inside for three days, being sick from vaccinations! woo!

you've got it made with the guy in shades

hearing corey hart on the radio this morning has inspired me, and i believe that a summer 2006 viewing of "the challengers" is in order. let me know if yer interested.

bury my heart at innisfree

some things i liked this week:

1. i went longboarding at the u of a last saturday, and i heard some squawky birds, so i laid down to watch them. one of the magpies flew away, but one flew close to me. first, he pecked at some gum that was stuck to the side of a bench, and then he pecked at a big bolt on the bench. then, he made eye contact with me, and kind of tilted his head, and we watched each other. he hopped over to me, and looked at my legs, and then hopped around to the other side of me. then he started pecking at my shoes and trying to eat them. i was laughing sooo hard, but he still kept doing it. cute. it reminded me of richard seine.

2. driving out of edmonton on highway 16A: i was behind a big, dirty semi and there was something pink dragging underneath it, near one of the back wheels. so i sped up to see what it was; to see if it was what i thought it was. and... indeed. it was a little girl's pink bodysuit with a tutu attached. part of me really liked it and wondered at it, and part of me felt really sick about it.

3. i like that my friends have been so supportive of my trip, especially andrea. nice to have support, even when you ditch out on fun vacations.

4. i liked reading jenni-girl's blogs. nice how she writes. nice what she writes.

5. i liked how hard it rained a few nights ago. i am excited for the rainy season in guyana.

6. i liked coming home for the fair with jenni, and seeing kelsey and mitch and andrea and trent. i liked that my grandma and gido came over to visit, and that they are so funny and crazy. i like that kelsey is so crazy about cotton candy. i like that i can spend time with her in calgary before i leave. i liked picking raspberries with andrea, and talking about soccer.

far, far away

i know blogs are lame, but i also know that spying on people over the internet without them knowing about it is awesome, so here is my online journal.

two weeks ago, i was planning on going to tofino for all of september, and then hoping for the best in terms of employment after that trip was finished. but last monday, i got a call from an agency i had sent an application to, and they said that someone who had been hired had dropped out, and there was a spot open. so... on monday, i found out about the position, tuesday morning i had the interview, and kind of assumed i hadn't gotten the position when i didn't get a call for a second interview by wednesday night (this was all happening super fast). then on thursday, when i was getting my car fixed in high prairie, the girl called me and offered me the position. so...

i am going to guyana, south america for 7 months!

my flight leaves in early september, and training is in calgary from mid-august until the end of the month.
