so... after a morning of movie-watching, i am confronted with these images just outside our "office." apparently, a cow had died, so some of the youth (not from my program, although they live here) were cutting it up and preparing it and selling it. i guess the cow had died from drinking cassava water. cassava is one of the main foods of the amerindians here: they eat farine and cassava bread, and they also have a drink (i forget what it's called), all made from cassava. it kind of creeps me out a bit that they are going to eat some cow that they just found dead, but i guess it's not like the cow drank mercury or anything. i don't know. i just like to think of my meat as happy and healthy before it's slaughtered.
on the table in the bottom picture is a watermelon, picked freshly from the garden, like one i enjoyed for breakfast this morning!
on the table in one of the other pictures is the cow's head. sick. for a girl who grew up in rural alberta, it seems a little strange that i haven't been confronted with this sight more often (as in, ever). i like this picture, though, because gilbert's facial expression is so classically kelseydawn.
