brought to you in part by ALT-1-3-0

first things first:
rumors have been circulating that pépe moréno was stabbed and killed a few weeks ago. now, there are about a million pépe morénos (morénoes?) in south america, so no one here is really sure if it was everybody's-celebrity-crush-pépe or someone else. i hope it was not our pépe.

my sister bought me Mrs. Dalloway for christmas, and i've been reading it over the past couple of days. i've never really liked female writers, and v.w. is no exception. at least in this book. i do, however, admire her use of punctuation, especially semicolons. if the bad news about pépe is true, then virginia and her semicolons take pépe's place on my celebrity crush list.

this summer, i began to realize that my lifelong attraction to socially awkward situations is most likely due to the fact that i am mildly addicted to adrenaline, and too safe/scared to do anything physical that, for most people, would induce adrenaline rushes. being socially awkward in guyana is difficult, because everyone either things i am just being flat out rude, or that it is just a "cultural difference." maybe that's why i loved places like high school and nakamun and university: so many places and situations to be awkward.

I hope it wasn't your Pepe! I love how you write off all female writers in one breath...if I were there with you we could have some fantastic discussions my friend because I would fight you on this. Anyways, glad to hear you're back safe. Now I am in Edmonton and missing your presence.

caylie,

can i give your email address to my friend kerry who worked in lethem a few years ago and also visited bina hill? she had a question she wanted to ask you, and i think was generally excited that you were in a similar place because, well, how likely is that? not very.

hope your last few months go well...and thanks for the worms, they are eating banana peels as i type. my sister loves them.

Hey Caylie: We are going to have to have a long chat, my friend, about women writers and someone's tendency to make huge generalizations (see Bri's message.) How can you, for example, read the first paragraphs of Carol Shields' _Unless_ and not weep with the beauty of the phrasing?? We could have SUCH a good discussion! And I am compiling a reading list for you :)

dear friends,
first, let me note that i am the least well-read (worst-read?) english major in history, so my opinion on ANY writer doesn't count for much. i DID like "the color purple," and i HAVE liked a bit of women's writing, but for the most part, i hate reading jane austen, and the brontes, and i HATE margaret atwood, and i just generally don't like fiction by females. there are definitely small bits of women's writing that i like: small phrases or sentences or imagery. but i just usually don't like reading novels by female authors. having said that, i don't really like reading novels in general. FURTHERMORE, my favorite novel IS by a female author, and it is fantastic (margaret craven's "i heard the owl call my name").

bethany,
please do give kerry my e-mail address. i was meaning to ask you more about her when i was home at christmas. i guess i forgot.

take care,
cdg
